TWIN CITIES SMART GROWTH INITIATIVE

ZHA is leading the market and economic component of the multi-disciplinary team (led by Calthorpe Associates) retained by the Metropolitan Council of Minneapolis to craft development strategies for six sites applying Smart Growth principles. ZHA is working on five of the six sites. Each site represents a unique market situation -- strip commercial, downtown, rural, first ring commercial center with a 1960's mall, and a new Town Center. The process is designed to assist each community in its planning of these critical sites given the introduction of metropolitan bus and/or rail service. In addition, ZHA is responsible for crafting an implementation plan to achieve Smart Growth development objectives. Ultimately, the results of this endeavor will be used by the Metropolitan Council and other communities to craft development strategies that make sense from both a market and Smart Growth standpoint.
